"If I am not for myself, who will be?
And if I am for myself alone, then what am I?
And if not now, when?"
Rabbi Hillel, Pirke Avot 1:14

Philosophy of X
Ethical Hedonism also has roots in the Cult of Amor developed by the medieval troubadours and trobaritzes who sang the praises of sensual desire intertwined with spiritual love. The origins of the term X-rated lie within this Romantic Revolution of the Middle Ages when many of the troubadours and Albegensians rebelled against the powerful Roman Catholic Church (Roma spelled backwards is Amor).

NEED TO TALK?

"The Lovers" from Charles VI Tarot Deck
The Church under Pope Innocent III unleashed the Albegensian Crusade of 1208, the only crusade of Christians against Christians, against the troubador culture of Southern France. These Albegensians, when caught and charged with heresy by Church officials, concealed their family names by signing their forced confessions of heresy with an X.

Artists painted X's in their paintings to communicate their position of romantic rebellion to their comrades. Now being rated X or XXX means a film has explicit sex.

The forces of sex and religion have battled each other for the souls of humanity for so long that one can hardly think of one without considering the opposition of the other. Must sex be irreverent to be hot? Is there such a thing as sacred sex? Why does religion seem to demonize recreational sex while sacralizing procreative sex?

At the Institute, we sacralize recreational sex, sometimes using the symbols of Christianity and Judaism, sometimes ancient Greco-Roman, Asian or African sacred symbols. Our erotic celebrations and commemorations run the gamut, from our Old-Time Sexual Revival wherein we "raise up ye who are limp and make wet ye who are dry," to our ritual whippings of "sinners" on the Bondage Cross and other pieces of S/M interactive sculpture to our Commedia Erotica Passion Plays of the Story of Queen Esther of the Hebrew Bible/Christian Old Testament who used her powers of sexual seduction to save her people from Genocide and our Juneteenth Erotic Emancipation Proclamation Celebration (including an erotic enactment of the Freeing of the Slaves). Then there was our fabulous Foot Fetish Salon held on the Thursday night before Easter, the traditional day for the "Washing of the Feet," when priests go to prisons to wash the feet of inmates. Every January, we celebrate Eros Day, the time when the planet Eros is closest to the Earth. Religion--new and old--is a constant topic of conversation, celebration and consternation at the Institute.

As a sex therapist in private practice, I specialize in treating victims of religious sexual abuse, people whose sex lives have been destroyed, distorted or excessively repressed by a strict, religious, anti-sex upbringing.

I listen and talk to thousands of these people every day. They don't all need psychiatric help. But they do need sexual knowledge of all kinds, from anatomy to philosophy. They need systems of though to help them understand, accept and shape their sexuality according to their pleasures and society's concerns. For more and more of these victims of religious sexual abuse, Ethical Hedonism is the most sensible system.

As for those who weren't brought up by a particular religion, they are yanked and nudged by the confusing commandments of the Media (Thou shalt covet this sexy actress, but thou shalt not see her nipples, lest we be struck with an NC-17 rating) and the Law (where Sex Crimes constitute a growth industry).
They need a system of thinking about sex, pleasure, pain and society that makes sense to all their senses, including their common sense.

For more and more of us, brothers and sisters, lovers and sinners, Ethical Hedonism is that system. Hallelujah. Let the pleasures continue. Amen and Awomen. Don't stop! Don't stop! Don't stop!
