OVER 40: You learned about our magazine from Dr. Susan Block,
the sex therapist Barbara Carrellas interviewed for our August 2000 issue.
How do you know Susan?
IVONA: I work for her as a telephone sex therapist.
OVER 40: How long have you been doing this?
IVONA: Five years. Previously, I was in nursing...
OVER 40: How did you meet Susan?
IVONA: I saw her on cable and called because I wanted an experience with a woman. I was invited to the studio the same night.
OVER 40: What happened when you got there?
IVONA: Dr. Suzy made me feel at ease. She asked me to lie on the bed on
her TV studio set, then one guy had oral sex with me while two audience

did you become a telephone sex therapist (with the Dr. Susan Block Institute)?
IVONA: I got into it because I like to fantasize and talk dirty...Previously,
I was a nurse for 21 years...I get pleasure out of taking care of people...from
making someone else happy and making their fantasies come true.

qualifications do you have for the job?
IVONA: An inventive mind, a background in acting...and nursing...

exactly do you do as a telephone sex therapist?
IVONA: Talk with callers about their fantasies or about the problems they
are having with their wives and girlfriends.
OVER 40: How
long does a phone session last?
IVONA: Twelve minutes is the minimum, but it can last longer. One call
lasted seven hours!
OVER 40: Who
are your clients? What type of guys are they?
IVONA: Everyone from regular guys to lawyers and brain surgeons.
OVER 40: What
are some of the typical problems you hear?
IVONA: Fantasies unfulfilled, such as oral sex, and not being able
to talk to their wives or girlfriends. I get a lot of guys who are unsure
of their sexual identity.

OVER 40: How
does role-playing help them?
IVONA: Role-playing meets clients' needs to express their feelings. They
also learn important things about themselves. Because we are on the telephone,
we don't see each other, they have anonymity, and that makes it easier
for them.
OVER 40: Can
you give us an example of how role-playing works?
IVONA: Well, I may pretend to be a mother who caught her son masturbating.
I encourage him to masturbate to completion in front of me. Then I praise
him as "Momma's good boy."
OVER 40: Do you
get the guys who call you off?
IVONA: Yeah, I'm pretty good at...giving the client a spontaneous experience
of pleasure.
OVER 40: Do you
have a particular area of expertise?
IVONA: Cross-dressers. I encourage them to make their fantasies a reality
by helping them get in touch with their feminine side. And they can trust
me, because I'm not judgmental.
OVER 40: You
have a fascinating job, and, I think, one that takes a special type of
personality. How would you describe yourself?
IVONA: As a warm and friendly person. Someone who can put people at ease.
And I'm outspoken, spontaneous, a giver. Honest. A lover, not a fighter.

OVER 40: Is sex
better now than when you were younger, or no? And why?
IVONA: Sex is much better now, because I understand my body better and
have more experience. I know how to ask for what I want, and I usually
get it.
OVER 40: Do you
masturbate while you fantasize?
IVONA: I masturbate two or three times a day, on my back with my favorite
toy, Mr. Hitachi, on high speed.
OVER 40: For
those who might not know, what is "Mr. Hitachi."
IVONA: It is a Hitachi Magic Wand vibrator. It's over a foot long, with
a big rubber head with nubs, and at least two speeds. It's not for insertion.

IVONA: Use lots of foreplay. Don't be so quick to jump on and off.
OVER 40: And for the ladies?
IVONA: Tell the man what you like and don't like. Make compromises.
OVER 40: Anything else? For either gender,
or both?
